Marriage is such a fascinating and amazing thing to observe. I spend my days photographing couples – most of whom are newly engaged or getting married. On occasion, and much to my delight, some of our clients book an Anniversary session. When they do, I am always amazed to see how different the dynamic is of their anniversary session compared to the previous times we’ve photographed them. This was our third time photographing Chris and Maria and there was a noticeable difference to me in this session. Make no mistake – during their engagement session it was so obvious that they were head over heels in love, and on their wedding day it was clear that they were the happiest they had ever been – but for their anniversary session they were…home. Home in each others arms. Home in the way they nuzzled in and snuggled close. Home in their belly laughter. Home in the way the looked into each others eyes.  It was apparent to me that marriage had made them stronger, together. There was an element of depth and grit to them that I hadn’t noticed in their eyes prior to this session. And, really, that sums up why I love anniversary sessions. They are a celebration of two people continuing to love and serve and honor one another day in and day out of their marriage – long after the gown has been hung up and the flowers have wilted. They are a celebration of waking up next to the same person every morning and wondering how on earth you got so lucky. A celebration of holding her in your arms as she unveils the deepest corners of her soul to you. A celebration of bringing him chicken soup in bed when he’s sick…and surviving what is commonly known among women as “Manflu”. 😉 Truly, anniversary sessions are one of my absolute favorite things to photograph for so many reasons, not the least of which are highlighted above.
