The Film Box

I grew up shooting film. My first camera was a 110mm Barbie camera that I got for my 11th birthday. It was slightly ironic because I was never into Barbies, but someone probably figured that if they got me something branded with the name “Barbie” that they couldn’t go wrong for an 11 year olds birthday party gift. Little did they know that their gift would set me on a path to appreciate art and eventually become a photographer of my own and go on to launch a highly successful wedding and boudoir photography studio.

As the years passed by, I developed my love for photography and for the distinct look that film provided. I remember the digital world becoming increasingly popular when I was around 17 years old and telling numerous people that I would never switch to digital because “the color and the feel just wasn’t the same”. Digital cameras became more advanced and eventually it made sense to switch, as film was not only becoming less popular, but also far less accessible. At 20 years old, I made the full switch to digital photography and….*gasp*…I don’t even know what ever happened to my first Canon Rebel film camera (I should look in my parents basement!). Digital grew on me, but in the recent months and years as film began making a comeback, I was reminded of those words I spoke long ago that the color and feel of digital just wasn’t the same.

As I began looking at more wedding photographers who shot film, my heart began to swell the way it did in my early years of photography. There is just something about film that has the ability to stop me dead in my tracks and make me audibly gasp. It has the ability to capture moments in a way that digital, as advanced and amazing as it is, can never rival. There is just something about the painterly colors, the depth, and the richness in film that can only be summed up in one word…SOUL. Film has such an old, deep soul to it. So it happened, inevitably, that this year I invested in one of the most coveted and respected film cameras. I’ve been secretly playing with it at weddings over the summer, getting back into the film groove, and I am SO EXCITED to announce that it is now an add-on option for all weddings and engagement sessions.
